It looks a bit different now to when we left 5 years ago!
My Melbourne garden was my first garden.
I grew beautiful purple wisteria and golden yellow roses.
Pinky apricot climbing roses (Crepsucule) and scarlet Virginia Creepers and burgandy-coloured grape vines.
Lipstick orange-red maples and pretty pink camellias.
Sadly since turning the property over to tenants who aren't keen gardeners, only half the plants remain.

But a new challenge has arisen.
Trying to create a self-maintaining garden that looks reasonably attractive.
I guess colour is the first casualty of a neglected garden.
I wonder why that is?

The existing climbing roses required too much maintenance for our non-gardener tenants and our infrequent visits, so I have opted to replace them with bush roses.
Last Spring I planted four along the front fence - only two remain:-
This beauty - Belle du Seigneur (beauty of the lord??)

and this one Bordure Camaieu - here's what camaieu means - a fairly apt description.
It's covered in buds - fingers crossed they last the summer.
If they don't - I think I am going to introduce an irrigation system to the garden.
Both roses are Delbard Roses - distributed in Australia by Rankins Roses.
I have a couple of these roses in my Ararat garden
and they really stand up to the conditions and always have such lovely colours.

Pressed for time, I had to choose from what little was available at the local Bunnings.
The Ballarat Bunnings and Toowoomba Bunnings garden sections are always fantastic.
The Melbourne ones - bleh.
Anyway... I picked these two.
I have a Parkinson's Passion at Pendlebury Hill and I find it to be a very jolly, hardy, long-flowering creature,
so hopefully it will thrive in Melbourne.
The other is an unknown quantity but I do love a bright yellow rose.
Let's see how long these ones last!
This one lives at No.28 in Ararat.
It's such a happy cheery rose.
And the petals really do look like the tutus in Degas' paintings.
A new one!
It doesn't have a home yet.
Aunty Maria always gives us $50 when she sees us.
This is what I bought.
(I have enough left for another rose!)

After 7 months of utter and total neglect, I felt sure my fledgling rose garden at Pendlebury Hill, Ararat
would be dead as a door nail (or door nails, as the case may be) - but plants always surprise me with their tenacity.
The rose garden is absolutely glorious and this year I am particularly taken with this one.
Augusta Luise.
Innit purdy?
Hybrid tea bush rose.
Absolutely covered in blooms.

Work continues slowly on my garden at home, but
I'm pretty lucky to live around the block from this lovely park
and we are currently celebrating the annual Carnival of Flowers.
Toowoomba looks as pretty as a picture.
All the public gardens around town are green and leafy and colourful.
Toowoomba is such an utterly civilized city to live in - tree-lined streets,
beautiful parks and gardens, stately homes and beautiful public buildings.
It kinda makes me feel a bit like I'm a bit too uncouth to live here!!!
I was recently reminded of this photo (2011 - my garden in Ararat).
I can't seem to get my creative gardening juices flowing.
I have a bit of a blockage.
Maybe coz it's winter.
Thought this photo might shake loose a few little feelers in my brain.
Poke, poke, prod.

See that plant stand.
I bought it for $5 from the rubbish tip shop in Toowoomba, Queensland a couple of years ago.
It's cast iron and weighed a tonne.
I put it in our wagon and carried it nearly 2000km down to our home in Victoria.
With our luggage and 3 dogs also in the wagon, we were uncomfortably squished.
Now I live in Toowoomba again (after 25 years away) and I'm gunna have to bring it 2000km back home!
Fun times.
Spring 2012
Aren't plants the most amazing things?
This year we have our first decent crop of mandarins.
This bowl represents about an 1/8 of the tree's bounty.

The fruit is sublime.
Sweet, juicy and just the right amount of tart.
It's an Emperor variety and the tree must be about 3 to 4 years old.

I really do have the best and most clever garden.
I totally abandoned it 7 months ago and left it to its own devices.
7 months!
Winter 2012
Time to say good-bye to my beautiful little garden in South-West Victoria,

and hello to gardening like a gypsy!
I know!
How am I going to do that?!

Well....being the footloose and fancy-free types we have morphed into, we shall be dividing our time between different places in Australia.
I shall have to take the opportunity to till the soil when and where I can.
It's not like - I can't NOT garden.
If there's one thing I know about myself and my life, it's that I shall always have to plant little seeds into the ground and share my life with plants.

At the moment, we are in my Mum and Dad's lovely garden in South-East Queensland on top of mountain.
Queensland is kinda sub-tropical but here, where they live, it gets rather chilly.
So I have been busy planting peas:
Snow Peas
Sugar Snap Peas
Telegraph Pole Peas.
Some Baby Broccoli,
Pak Choi,
Leeks,
Potatoes,
Sweet Peas,
Pansies,
Snap Dragons,
Alyssum,
Bulbs - Dutch Iris, Grape Hyacinth, Narcissus.

Do Mum and Dad want all these vegies in their garden?
Huh?
Is that a consideration?!
It's the first time our tree has fruited - I think this is the 2nd year it has been in the ground.
It made about 15 fruits.
Here's what's left.
They are especially perfect - we don't like soft fruit.
But we don't like juiceless fruit either.
It has to be juuuuuust right.
And hooray!!
They are.freefallinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08863000229609701796noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3769770503576545105.post-21266623320067303442012-01-27T17:12:00.000+11:002014-07-25T16:34:35.206+10:00Thanks Garden - You're Ace!

No evidence, as we ate it.
It was PERFECT.
Thanks Uncle Tony and Uncle Pino for striking the tree for us.
Hooray! Hooray!
The apricots are ready.
We traipsed over to our "allotment" (Pendlebury Hill) yesterday to work on the rose garden and
we were pleasantly surprised to see little orange dots all over the apricot tree.

Below is the tree last year - overgrown with grass and weeds.
Lots of newspaper and lots of pea straw and this year we have around 15 kg of fruit!

Apricot grading has commenced,
to be followed by jam making, cake-baking and preserves.
Well, the onions have been in for 6 months and are ready to come up.
The smelly ones were ready first.

The non-smelly ones were a bit slower and some developed bull necks.
Have since read this (by Peter Cundall - he always has the best tips) and understand the reason.
Note to self - read article again next year before planting.
Now to cure them and store them away.

I know everyone says how much tastier home-grown vegies are,
but Vince and I were both surprised by the "high degree of niceness" of home-grown onions compared to the store bought ones.
Kinda crisper and fresher.
So excited to make dinner tonight from fresh produce straight from our vegie patch!

The last of the Broad Beans.
The first lot of the onions.
My purple potatoes.
And a big handful of flat-leaf parsley.

I fried them all up in some extra virgin olive oil, some chopped bacon and some freshly ground pepper and salt.
We are both full as fat little ticks!

Innit pretty now?
It's my favourite place at the moment to sit in the garden and hang out with my peeps
(note tennis ball under table).
And I love that most of it is second-hand!
Our $2 bbq table from the tip.
A transplanted rose from the previous owners.
A white nectarine tree struck for us by Uncle Tony or Uncle Pino (they both struck one for me and I can't remember who did this one).
My old deckchairs from Mum & Dad from 1996.
My chandelier from the reclaim shop (can you see it hanging in there?)
The geraniums are struck from cuttings from the house we stay in at Port Fairy.
Vince grew our beautiful lawn from runners he collected from overgrown footpaths.
I dunno if you can see it in there Natalie, but behind one of those chairs is the white daisy which you struck for me.
My chair covers - half-price on sale!
My blue and white pot from the Reject Shop.
It's so satisfying to bodge something up from stuff you can find and free stuff you are given.

I love too - that now, this one little corner is so productive.
We chopped out those awful Pittosporum trees and now we have
4 fruit trees (peach, loquat, white nectarine, mulberry)
herbs - rosemary, thyme, parsley, oregano, sage, mint.
And there are roses for picking - azaleas, daisies, geranium, statice, gazanias and nasturtiums.
It's amazing how much you can shove into a couple of square metres!
